“Zenaida” and “Jewel” prior to RYC Beer Can races

Richmond, CA May 22, 2019

Updates welcome! AE28 ‘Minna’ for sale, August 31, 2019 is next RYC race with Lobster at the finish

Bay Area Alerion news continues to trickle in. I was recently put in contact with Patti Walters and Len Ortolano, who purchased ‘Two Block Fox’ two years ago and renamed her ‘Encore,’ now berthed in Redwood City, CA. I am updating the roster and site accordingly.

Also, I learned Barney Barnett has decided to sell ‘Minna,’ AE28 #254, located in Belvedere, CA. Here is information he provided:

Hello fellow Alerion Sailors, last year I got side-swiped by an SUV while riding my hand cycle in San Anselmo. The accident really screwed up my right shoulder so I went from using crutches to a wheelchair. The use of our boat has taken a serious hit so we have decided with much regret to put it up for sale. “Minna” was built in 2004 (#254) and is in excellent condition. It comes with  Tacktick instruments, two suits of sails, full and cockpit covers, blue Awlgrip painted topsides and beautiful bright work. The Volvo engine was just serviced and works well. If you know of anyone interested in purchasing a great boat have them give me a call at 415-459-0589 or 415-450-8507. The boat is located at The San Francisco Yacht Club in Belvedere. Any help you might give is much appreciated. Regards, Barney Barnett

Alerion racing, 2019 season

Hi Folks,
Just wanted to send out a reminder that our summer racing series is just around the corner.  As I had previously mentioned, we will be doing the Richmond Yacht Club intraclub series which consists of 4 race days with I believe only one race per day.  Please note that the original race #1 date of May 4th has been changed to May 18th.  Also, we had discussed doing the Moseley  Regatta which is a 3 race day at Tiburon Yacht club on aug 3rd, but they have decided to cancel the regatta so that’s out.  I looked for something else in the 2019 sailing calendar, but didn’t really see anything around that time that looks like a good fit for us.  If anyone has any ideas, I’m all ears.
so here’s our 2019 schedule as it stands now:

  • ryc intraclub #1 – May 18th
  • ryc intraclub #2 – June 22nd
  • ryc intraclub #3 – September 7th
  • ryc intraclub #4 – October 12th

By the way, for members of other yacht clubs, do not worry about the intraclub title of the event.  Our division will be open to all Alerion 28’s who want to participate and will be a one design class.  As of today I could not find a way to register for the series, but as soon as it becomes available I will forward it on to the fleet.
Congrats to Paul Descalso on Sobrante for the win in his division (single handed non spin) in the SSS ‘Round the Rocks’  race last weekend.  Way to go Paul!
And for those of you who haven’t heard the news, we have been having great turn outs of 3 or 4 Alerion 28’s for the Wednesday evening ‘beer can’ races at RYC.  So if your boat is located in or near Richmond you should try an get out there and have some fun with us.  It’s free, there is no registration necessary, it happens every Wednesday evening from April through September, and you don’t need to be an RYC member to participate.  You might even win yourself a bottle of wine if you do something the PRO likes, which is not necessarily winning, Eric has a very unique scoring system.  Congrats to Fred on his new boat Zenaida,  he’s been crushing it!
all for now, see ya on the water!

February 4, 2015

The Alerion 28 Fleet 1 executive board is pleased to announce our 2015 Season Racing Schedule. Racing is scheduled in March, April, June, August and October.

Races are on Saturday, with the exception of the San Francisco Yacht Club Fall Classic, which is a 2 day event. All races, less one throwout, will count toward our Season Championship.

Social events are planned after each race. Non racing members are welcome to join us for any of the post race social events.

Rites of Spring – Oakland Yacht Club- Saturday, March 14.

Richmond Yacht Club Intra Club Series -Saturday April 18, Saturday June 27, Saturday August 22 and Saturday October 17

Buoy races will be run from the RYC committee boat, Pelican. Starts and finishes in the well-known Southampton area. There will be separate divisions for Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker racers, a Wabbit and Sport Boats division and for the first time by invitation an Alerion 28 One Design division open to all Alerion 28’s . Please Register now on the Richmond Yacht Club website, BE SURE to check the individual Sailing Instructions for each race day. We’ll try to send the RYC fleet to parts of the bay with good wind, favorable current and minimum interference from other events

First Warning will be at 2pm which is later than last year but the idea is to keep us all on the water until closer to the scheduled EARLY DINNER TIME so please plan on a full day at RYC on each of these dates. Special events are being planned for each race day evening. For example April 18 will feature a combined Chili Cook off and Movie Night. Look for more details from Chili event Chair Mary Lou Clark.

$50 entry fee for 4 race series includes one ticket to German Dinner on the final day of the series. Additional tickets are available for $20 per person.

Overnight berthing before and after each race is available at no charge to any Alerion 28 owned by a member of a reciprocal yacht club. Berthing should be arranged in advance by contacting the RYC harbormaster, John Dinwiddie at (510) 234-6959 or

SFYC Fall Classic- October 10 and 11
Two days of buoy racing in the Knox area. Past races have been well run and it’s fun to race with the Knarrs, Birds, IOD’s and Folkboats. PuPu’s and wine and beer on the sunny SFYC deck after Saturday racing. Overnight berthing is usually available on Friday and Saturday nights. Full meal service at SFYC including breakfast. Look for registration information and race documents at in late August or early September.

Look forward to seeing you out there in 2015.

Alerion Racing Starts for 2013

  • We have at least five boats registered for the Richmond Yacht Club Big Daddy Regatta on March 9. There will be at least three races on the 9th. There is still time to sign up. Any other boats interested in joining the fun can register at
  • We also have several boats that will enter the Oakland Yacht Club Rites of Spring Regatta on March 23rd. The Rites of Spring is an intellectually challenging “Around the Bay Race” with a wide variety of conditions.  It is always interesting! So far, Jewel, Dream and Ditzy are committed. If you would like to enter, this link has the Notice of Race and Entry form.
  • You should also put the Summer Classic, run by SFYC,  on your calendar. It will be held on July 20 and 21. There are two races scheduled on Saturday and two on Sunday. Racing is usually on the Knox Course. There is a party on Saturday after the races. For the last few years our fleet has raced this fun event when it was known as the Fall Classic, but due to the Americas’ Cup it is being held earlier this year.
